"Sea air is good for the joints" is one of the oldest folk prescriptions going — and our 35-city, 12-month weather analysis says the old-timers had hold of something real, for a reason they couldn't have named: the ocean is a giant pressure stabilizer. Water heats and cools slowly, moderating the temperature contrasts that drive violent pressure systems — so coastal atmospheres swing less. In our data, the coastal metros (Honolulu, LA, San Diego, Miami, Tampa, Seattle) occupy the entire stable end of the pressure-volatility table, while the continental interior (Minneapolis, Kansas City, Denver, Oklahoma City) supplies the churn. Since pressure change is the best-supported weather trigger, the coastal edge is real — with fine print worth reading.

What the numbers say

The pattern in our Flare City Index data is stark: Honolulu logged zero days with a ≥6 hPa pressure swing in twelve months; San Diego and LA logged three each; Miami five — while Minneapolis logged 132, and even mid-continental cities ran 90–110. Marine-layer coasts are, atmospherically, a different planet from the storm corridor. Even Seattle — everyone's assumed worst-case — posts below-average volatility: grey, but steady. For a pressure-swing responder, moving from the continental interior to almost any coast is a genuine reduction in trigger dose.

The fine print (where the folklore oversimplifies)

Coasts trade swings for humidity. Sea air is damp air — most coastal metros in our data run 66–76% average humidity — so damp-responders can do worse seaside, and the ideal profile (stable and dry) basically exists only where desert meets ocean: the Southern California coast, which is why it stacks the best-cities list alongside desert Phoenix.

Not all coasts are equal. The stability dividend belongs to warm-water and marine-layer coasts (SoCal, Gulf, Hawaii, Florida). The Northeast Atlantic coast plays for the other team — Boston is a top-five volatility city in our data, because it sits on the continental storm track's exit ramp; nor'easters are coastal storms with interior-grade pressure violence. And Gulf/Florida stability carries the hurricane-season asterisk: months of calm punctuated by the most violent pressure events in North America.

Altitude adds an inland wrinkle: high-elevation living means permanently lower absolute pressure — which bodies re-baseline to — but mountain weather brings its own swing regime (Denver's trap-state profile) plus chinook-style downslope events.

The honest hierarchy for anyone weighing the coast: your tracked trigger type first, coastline second. Pressure-responders gain most from marine-layer coasts; damp-responders should look at the dry interior instead; cold-stiff-only types just want mild.
