We pulled 12 months of daily weather data — August 2025 through July 2026 — for 35 major U.S. metros and scored each one on the three things research actually links to joint pain: barometric pressure swings, humidity, and freezing days. The results: Minneapolis, Buffalo, and Detroit have the worst arthritis weather in America; Phoenix wins best by a landslide — and Seattle, everyone's assumed villain, lands surprisingly mid-pack. Every number below is computed from real atmospheric records, with the full methodology at the bottom.
Why we ranked cities this way
Most "best places for arthritis" lists rank warmth. The research says that's the wrong variable: the largest weather-pain studies implicate pressure change, humidity, and damp-cold conditions — with temperature itself playing a smaller independent role. So our Flare City Index (0–100, higher = worse for weather-sensitive joints) weights what the evidence weights: 30% average day-over-day pressure swing, 25% count of big-swing days (≥6 hPa in 24 hours — the change size many pressure-sensitive people report feeling), 25% average relative humidity, 20% freezing days.

- Buffalo, NY — 92.1. 126 big-swing days, 74% humidity, 113 freezing days: Great Lakes moisture meets relentless frontal traffic.

A runaway win, and a fascinating one: Phoenix pairs near-tropical pressure stability (just 6 big-swing days all year) with desert dryness (32% average humidity — half of everywhere else) and zero freezes. The desert Southwest's folk reputation is, per the data, entirely earned.
- Honolulu, HI — 22.7. The stability champion: zero days with a ≥6 hPa swing in twelve months, and an average daily swing of 0.94 hPa — a fifth of Minneapolis's. Its humidity (72%) keeps it from taking the crown.

- Miami, FL — 27.7. Humid but atmospherically calm (5 big-swing days) — evidence that steady humidity beats swinging pressure in the index, which is exactly what within-person research suggests.
Three findings worth stealing
Seattle is not the villain (rank 17 of 35). The rainiest-reputation city posts below-average pressure volatility — grey and drizzly, yes, but atmospherically steadier than the entire Midwest. If damp is your trigger, Seattle's 76% humidity still argues against it; if pressure swings are (the more common pattern), the Pacific Northwest is genuinely gentler than its weather-app reputation. Denver splits the same way in reverse (rank 15): huge swing counts (108 big days) rescued by desert dryness — a pressure-sensitive person's caution flag wearing a dry climate's clothing.
The gradient is enormous. Minneapolis delivers a big pressure swing every 2.8 days; Honolulu delivered none in a year. Whatever weather sensitivity you have, the dose varies by an order of magnitude across U.S. cities — which is why the same condition can feel so different after a move.
But read this before calling the movers: an index measures the weather, not your response to it — individual triggers vary hugely, bodies partially re-baseline after relocating, and a move costs you your medical team and support network. Methodology and caveats
Daily mean sea-level pressure, relative humidity, and minimum temperature for each metro's coordinates, August 1, 2025–July 31, 2026, from the Open-Meteo historical archive (ERA5 reanalysis). Pressure volatility = mean absolute day-over-day change in daily-mean MSL pressure; big-swing days = days with ≥6 hPa change vs. the prior day. Index components min-max normalized across the 35 cities, weighted 30/25/25/20 as above. Caveats, honestly: one year of data (a single unusual season can nudge ranks); daily means smooth out some intra-day swings (absolute swing counts are conservative — relative rankings are robust); component weights are our judgment, stated openly, informed by the research on which variables matter; and no index captures within-city microclimates.
