Meet your synovial fluid
Every mobile joint is a sealed capsule lined with a membrane (the synovium) that produces a small amount of remarkable fluid — typically just a few milliliters even in a big joint like the knee. That fluid does three jobs: it lubricates the sliding cartilage surfaces, it cushions load, and it feeds cartilage, which has no blood supply of its own and relies on nutrients diffusing in from the fluid.
The key ingredient is hyaluronic acid — enormous chain-like molecules that give the fluid its characteristic egg-white texture (synovial literally derives from "like egg white"). Those chains are what make the fluid a great lubricant, and they're also what makes its behavior temperature- and motion-dependent.
What cold does to it
Two well-established effects stack up in winter:
- Viscosity rises as temperature falls. This is bedrock fluid physics: molecular motion slows, the hyaluronic chains slide past each other less freely, and the fluid resists flow. Peripheral joints — hands, feet, knees — genuinely cool in cold weather; they sit far from the body's core and, in the cold, the body actively reduces blood flow to them to conserve heat. Cooler joint, thicker fluid, stiffer motion.
- Stillness makes it worse. Synovial fluid is shear-thinning: it becomes more fluid with movement and thicker at rest. A cold night of stillness is the double whammy — which is exactly why the worst stiffness of the day is the first ten minutes of a winter morning, and why it eases as you move. Motion literally re-liquefies the lubricant while warming the joint.
Arthritis raises the stakes on both. In osteoarthritis, the fluid itself changes — hyaluronic chains become shorter and the fluid thinner and less protective overall — so the joint is running on degraded lubricant even before cold makes it sluggish, with roughened cartilage surfaces that need every bit of lubrication they can get.

- Move little and often. Because the fluid is shear-thinning, frequent gentle motion beats occasional heroic exercise for keeping it fluid. Set-an-hourly-timer ankle circles and finger bends genuinely count.
