It makes mechanical sense — bursitis and tendonitis are, definitionally, inflamed soft tissue, and inflamed tissue with sensitized nerve endings is exactly the substrate the weather-pain mechanism runs on. - Warm before load, religiously. More than arthritis even, tendon problems reward the pre-activity warm-up — cold days double the requirement. Heat the specific area (shower stream, heat pack) before demanding anything of it.
- Heat-or-ice by state, soft-tissue edition: chronic stiff-achy tendonitis and cold-weather ache → heat; an acutely inflamed, swollen bursa (or fresh tendon strain) → ice. The touch test transfers directly. One addition: a bursa that's red, hot, and rapidly swelling — especially at the elbow or knee — can be infected, which is a same-day medical problem, not a compress decision.
- Keep the tendon loaded — appropriately. Modern tendon rehab runs on progressive loading (eccentric work, physio-guided), not rest; cold seasons tempt total shutdown, which weakens the tendon for spring. The winter movement rules apply: modify dose on rough days, never zero it.
